Terraces As Outdoor Rooms

by Kent Higgins

In these times when the costs of building make large houses extremely expensive, there is a way to extend your living area and that is to use your outdoor space to full advantage. There are many contemporary houses that have made many a room appear larger by visually extending it into the lawn or garden. This has been achieved through the use of tricks such as glass walls, continuing the use of a wall material inside and out on a terrace and doing the same for the ceiling. With such techniques it is now possible to have your living room, dining room and even the bedrooms in the house flow right outdoors on to decks of wood that appear to “float” , terraces constructed of brick or cement blocks or lattice roofs.

Skills you Need to Rehab a Home

by Erin Cureton

Drywall/ Plaster Repair When rehabbing old houses, cracks and holes in the plaster are common. Often, holes in ceiling plaster are the result of water infiltrating either from the roof, or from a split plumbing line. Holes in walls are often the result of vandalism, but could be the sign of more serious foundation issues. Once the root cause is fixed (see basic water repair section) cut a square area and replace with inch drywall. Once your piece is cut, secure it with multiple drywall screws, mud the gaps, tape, re-mud then sand to a smooth finish.

Solar Power Systems For The Home

by Adrian Fletcher

Solar power for homes has truly come a very long way since the early, boxy design of solar panels that most of us have seen. Great advances have been made with respect to solar cell construction which allow a variety of building materials be made with the solar cells incorporated into the design, thus effectively making them almost undetectable.

There are two ways that solar power for homes is supplied. These are off-grid and on grid or net metering. A stand alone solar power system acts as the sole source of electricity for your home and is off the grid as such. Alternatively, supplemental solar power systems, can supply all of your homes energy depending on sunlight availability. When sunlight is not available, your home can use energy from the power grid.
