Decorating your Christmas tree is an opportunity to use your creative design ideas. The “How” of decorating your tree is an expression of your interests and tastes. No matter your design choice here are some tips to get you started.
1. Are you going to use a theme? If so be sure the colors go with your tree and the room the tree is in. The ornaments you use depend upon the theme. Themes can be specific colors or a scene from your family history, episode in a movie or some historical event or time.
2. No matter if you use a theme or not be sure to add some personal decorations. Personal ornaments always add to the tree and make it especially unique. No one will have exactly the same ornaments as you have on your tree.
3. Before you hang a single ornament, plan how you will store the ornaments when you take down the tree. Save the original ornament boxes if you possibly can. If the storage box is no longer usable you maybe able to buy new ones at a moving company or storage location sit.
4. Christmas tree lights are the highlighters of the Christmas tree. The lights show off the beauty of the decorations. Many bulbs heat up rapidly so keep them away from the branches and needles of the tree.
5. Test your lights before you place them on the tree. Be sure the wires are in good shape and no bare wire is exposed. Start from the top of the tree and work your way down and around. Remember where the plug is, so you end up near enough to plug in the lights.
6. Proper Christmas light storage can save hours of frustration. Just wind the lights around a piece of cardboard or an empty can. This way the lights won’t become a tangled mess. The cardboard also keeps the wires straight which decreases breakage.
7. When starting to hang ornaments work from the bottom up. Place larger ornaments near the bottom and then the smaller ones up top. Have pets? You may want to place ornaments a little higher on the tree to minimize damage to the ornaments.
8. Unsure how to hang tinsel? Take a lesson from Mother Nature. After a snow or ice storm you see most of the snow on the ends of the branches. Do the same when you hang the tinsel.
9. In general less is best. A tree with too many ornaments looks overwhelmed and messy. Find the smallest number of ornaments to make the tree look great without overwhelming it.
