Constructing a Well on Your Property

by Haylee Landford

The best way to make sure that you have a direct personal water supply after you buy New Mexico land may be to dig a well on your property. If you have been concerned about purchasing land for sale in New Mexico, but have always wanted to buy, educate yourself on how to build a well on your property. There are some things you will need to have on hand ahead of time so you may need to make some purchases as far as tools go.

If you buy New Mexico land and you need to dig a water well, you’ll need some supplies to make sure the project is done correctly. A pick and a shovel will be used to dig the hole. Stones and brick can be used when digging a water well to line the walls, the bottom of the well and to prevent collapse. Mortar will help keep the brick in place. A rope and a sturdy bucket are effective tools for clearing the well of dirt and any debris discovered underground. A ladder will also be needed for adding the bricks and mortar.

When deciding where to place the well on your land, it needs to be 100 feet away from the water source itself. Also, its important to dig a spot for the water well that’s 100 feet away from any and all contaminants. These contaminants might include landfills, home septic systems or things like underground storage receptacles. You really need to dig the water well at a site uphill from any potential contaminants or contaminated areas. When you buy New Mexico land for sale, you’ll need to find a good spot to dig your water well.

Start by marking off the size of the well opening when you are ready to dig the well. This should be a 2 person job, so when one of the people digs the well out, the other person should stay above the ground to supervise the proceedings and to help pull up the buckets of dirt and put the dirt in something for disposal. Your well opening should be about a five feet across circle. It may be necessary to dig out the walls a bit further than you planned to avoid them from crumbling. The person digging needs to keep an intimate view of the walls of the well to avoid cave-ins.

There are fairly clear-cut steps to digging a well. If you have equipment like a windlass or something similar to lift out dirt unaided, the process will go more quickly. In addition to removing dirt, the rope and bucket or other lifting equipment can also be used to deliver rocks or mortar to the bottom of the well. The well should be at least six feet deep.

Six inches of rocks should be laid across the bottom of the well to act as a filter. Place bricks firmly along the walls of the well and use mortar to keep them in place. Continue to lay bricks and mortar for another 18 inches to two feet above the well opening. Install the well pump and use a cement cover to protect the well opening.

If the well is no longer needed, it should be closed to prevent mishaps. Use clay soil to fill up a well and to keep unsuspecting animals (and people) safe.
