Decorating Ideas For A Southern Look

by Kimberly Tifone

What makes a Southern theme likeable? Three things are for certain – it’s cozy, inviting and pretty! The flowers, floral prints, farmhouse appeal, pastel and other light colors, soft textures, airy rooms and the relaxing ambiance that go with a Southern style are too hard to resist. With a few decorating tips, you can make your home into your own country get-away.

Remember that country style is subdued and simple. If there’s anything ornamental about this design, it’s only the prints that are usually nature-inspired. The colors are neutrals, pastels and light. No bold and deep shades that are strong to the eyes. Everything about a Southern home is relaxing, comfortable and homely.

Neutrals are the shades you’ll most often see in a country home. Walls are often done in ‘soft’ colours like beige or light peach, with much of the detail coming from things like stamped borders. Earthy or farm-themed designs like vines or chickens are the designs most often used for the border stamps. Using fruits as decor can also add a lot to the farmhouse theme: a beautiful bowl full of artificial apples should already give you the effect you want.

Antiques are another major design element in a country home. The furniture, for one, almost always has at least one vintage piece, usually an heirloom that’s been handed down for generations. Of course, there are also those pieces that come from garage sales and flea markets. Old-style kitchen tools like hand blenders and weathered chopping boards should also add to that vintage charm. Aged sepia or black and white photos of relatives usually round out the mix.

Rugs have an added important in this aesthetic, especially since focus is of such great importance. Many Southern homes have a rug in every room, sometimes even going as far as placing one on porches and patios. The rugs used indoors are usually softer and made of wool or cotton, while those outdoors and in heavily used rooms may be made of tougher materials like jute. Hardwood floors are common in Southern homes so a soft, light coloured rug makes for a great complement.

Southern theme will look more polished with the addition of nature and farm items. You can display farm implements, fresh flowers and potted plants. Hanging a straw hat at the rack in the entryway may be simple but it’s a realistic touch to the Southern theme. Fresh fruits and vegetables in the kitchen table are also simple decorations but one that reflect a Southern atmosphere. A cow and a goat are far-off especially if you’re a city dweller…but they’re real winners for a Southern-inspired home.
