Decorating Ideas For A Western, Countryside Theme

by Jackson Monero

Do you long for a vacation in a cozy, mountain cabin? Wouldn’t it be nice to leave work and hide away in a rustic retreat, surrounded by nature’s glorious beauty? You can create your own personal rustic hideaway with a simple home makeover. Redesign your home’s style and add elements of rustic flair in a few easy steps.

When we say countryside, cottage and cabin, what comes to mind are nature, fresh air, rustic and simple. Those are the things associated with living in the country. Thus, in making your home a “cottage or cabin” in the countryside, you should have all these elements. Bring nature into your home such as plants, flowers, twigs, tree branches and rocks. Use them as decors and incorporate them in the rooms. Place potted flowers on the windowsill, have some hanging plants, put some twigs in a nice vase, lean a tree branch against the wall and place rocks as table centerpieces.

Use a color motif that is reminiscent of nature, freshness and simplicity. This is not a club wannabe but a warm and cozy abode. Nice colors you can choose from are shades of green, blue, yellow, brown and red.

Western style cabins are usually sparsely furnished with simple pieces and clean lines. The more natural wood you can incorporate, the better your design will look. Consider refinishing thrift store coffee tables or dressers to replace furniture on a small budget. You can also search the thrift store for accessories with an antique feel. Look for old glass bottles, antique kitchen tools, quilts, embroidered pillows, and Native American crafts.

Area rugs are beautiful pieces you can display to enhance the countryside theme. Neutral or earth colors are ideal. Animal prints look good as well, or have a southwestern rug like a Navajo rug as a showpiece in the living room. Choose soft fabrics to give you a more comforting feel.

Want more western vibe? Use items like a rawhide as a wall hanging or horseshoes as decors. Cover your throw pillows in western-inspired cloths. Have some cowboy hats hanging in the hallway. Let your creative juices flow. You can even display western movie DVDs in the den and play some soothing country music for an added western feel.

Last, make sure you take advantage of all available natural lighting. Harsh overhead lights will ruin the effect of rustic design so use your windows as a design element. Add lamps around the room as needed to compensate in areas with little natural light. When your room makeover is complete, relax and enjoy your beautiful, Western retreat.
