The paintings and trademark strong brushwork of Vincent Willem van Gogh are so well known and so widely recognized as to be iconic. In his canvas Irises, Saint-Remy, van Gogh shows us a picturesque planting of irises in a garden. A solitary white flower seems incandescent in contrast to the saturated blues of the other blooms. The Starry Night, perhaps van Gogh’s masterpiece, is another intense and dramatic image. The night sky above a village is ablaze with gyrating, roiling stars and an enormous full moon. It is remarkable that so vivid an image was painted completely by memory by van Gogh. The drama and majesty of these paintings have now come alive as tapestry wall hangings for the home.
Another familiar van Gogh canvas is Bedroom in Arles. It details the interior of his bedroom at his house in Arles, France, called the Yellow House. An otherwise simple, rustic room with bed, chairs and a table, the space is unique because of its trapezoidal shape. Van Gogh painted no less that three version of Bedroom in Arles. The Bedroom is one of Decor4u.com’s tapestries from Belgium and is based on the third version of this work. In all of these tapestries, van Gogh’s characteristic use of bold color and forceful painting style have been faithfully reproduced.
Austrian painter Gustav Klimt was one of the best known artists of the Art Noveau period. The Kiss is undeniably one of his most famous paintings. It shows a man and a woman on a bank of flowers, sharing an embrace. The two seem to merge together as well as mingle with their surroundings. The Kiss was painted during his so-called Golden Phase. Inspired by the renowned mosaics he had seen in Italy, Klimt had started incorporating gold leaf in his works. This breathtaking tapestry, one of Decor4.com’s many tapestries from Europe, has been adorned with gold threads to bring it more vividly to life.
During the era in which Klimt painted, many of the subjects he painted were considered objectionable. For instance, his painting Lady with Fan. We are shown an intimate glimpse of an anonymous woman. Cheeks flushed, hair loosened, she seems lost in a reverie and unaware that her dressing gown has slipped from her shoulder. We do not see her in a room or with others, instead she stands out against a stylized Art Noveau background of swirling organic motifs. The brilliance of Klimt’s brushwork and imagery are expertly preserved by the talented weavers of this decorative tapestry.
Claude Monet is another world famous artist and founder of the Impressionist school of painting. Indeed, the movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Soleil Levant (Impression, Sunrise). Following the Impressionist creed that art take its inspiration from the natural world, Monet found many subjects for his paintings at his famous gardens at Giverny. In Monet’s Irises, we see a grouping of these tall graceful flowers against a soft summer sky. The brush strokes give a sense of movement to the irises, so that the petals and foliage seem to be swaying in the breeze. The exquisite detail in Monet’s Iris wall hanging allows all this to be seen, down to Monet’s bold signature.
Another well known French Impressionist artist is Pierre-August Renoir. He was a remarkably productive painter who created thousands of canvases over the span of his career. Many have commanded record-breaking prices. The signature of so many of his canvases is his talent for bringing a directness and feeling of immediacy to his portraits of people. This can be seen in the painting Dance at Bougival. A couple is shown doing a spirited dance, absorbed in the gaiety of the moment. Yet Renoir’s use of light and shadow surrounds the couple with a delicate luminosity, lifting the painting from the merely charming to the sublime. Dance at Bougival Wall Art from Decor4u.com lets you add the mastery and grace of Renoir to your home.
French post-Impressionist Paul Ranson was a member and creative force of the group of avant-garde artists calling themselves Les Nabis, or The Prophets. Les Nabis followed the philosophy that art could be simultaneously representational and symbolic. It was this thinking that would open the way for abstract expressionist art. An example of this blending of expression can be seen in Ranson’s Apple Tree with Red Fruit. On the surface, it is a painting of an apple tree set in nature. However, the branches of the tree are drawn in such a way to resemble human limbs, giving symbolic subtext to the picture. Ranson’s dramatic use of color and form are given added depth when recreated as tapestry art.
Fans of contemporary art can find by Famous Artists wall tapestries to suit their tastes as well. Bunny Oliver is a present day Impressionist whose technique reflects her extensive studies with other modern Impressionist masters. She chooses still life for many of her canvases, believing that much of life’s beauty can be fond in simple scenes and common objects. In her painting, Poppies Galore, a bunch of red poppies seem to burst from their blue and white porcelain vase. Her use of vibrant color and contrast give a dynamic feel to what could be a static scene. The color and shapes of Poppies Galore by Bunny Oliver achieve a new vitality when rendered in tapestry form.
